StarCraft II, the sequel to the ever-popular StarCraft: Brood War, has shown us that the interstellar war between the protoss, zerg, and terran is far from over. It was reignited in Wings of Liberty®, and the zerg swarmed the galaxy again in the Heart of the Swarm®, and revelations from Legacy of the Void® reverbrated throughout the known universe.
When we thought things have been finally resolved; when skirmishes are the only battles left, Blizzard Entertainment announced that war is just beginning and it will soon engulfed more people as StarCraft II goes free-to-play!
On November 14, a Tuesday, gamers everywhere will get access, free-of-charge, to the full StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty® campaign and the elite multiplayer competition of the game’s ranked ladder, together with the latest units and balance updates introduced in Legacy of the Void®. The co-op mode and all the co-op commanders will also be playable for free.
Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment, said that
StarCraft II is one of the highest-rated PC games of all time, and we’re excited to give even more people around the world a chance to find out why it has inspired such a passionate global community.
Ranked Ladder Games
It was further explained that free-to-play accounts (accounts with no prior Campaign purchases), will get access to the ranked ladder after earning the first 10 wins of the day in Unranked mode or Versus A.I. mode. Though, by purchasing any campaign, the Campaign Collection, or the War Chest, ranked ladder access is granted automatically.
In addition, Co-op Commanders are available for free only up to level 5, except for Raynor, Kerrigan, and Artanis. To advance the Co-ops Commanders, a purchase is required.
As was mentioned, the free-to-play aspect of StarCraft II only comes with the terran campaign, Wings of Liberty. For players interested to play and know the story of the zerg and protoss, as well as other stories, the Heart of Swarm, Legacy of the Void, and Nova Covert Ops®, are available individually for U$14.99 each. All three can also be purchased as a Campaign Collection for only U$39.99 through the online Blizzard Shop.
For accounts with Wings of Liberty already as of October 31, 2017 but have not yer purchased Heart of the Swarm, will receive the latter for free simply by logging-in to the Blizzard Battle.net® desktop app and claim their free Heart of Swarm gift between November 8 and December 8 of this year. All you need after is Legacy of the Void and Nova Covert Ops.
StarCraft II now delivers the ultimate real-time strategy experience completely free.
But wait… there’s more!
For players whose accounts have any version of StarCraft II prior to October 21, 2017, as a thank-you, Blizzard Entertainment has decided to give away a special Eidolon Ghost skin and three portraits commemorating their founder’s status in the game after it goes free-to-play.
