Piranha Games announced at a packed house of MechWarrior fans at Mech_Con 2016 the new and upcoming MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries. It has been almost 15 years since the last standalone single-player PC release of this classic, challenging, competitive, and very fun mech franchise.
For me, the last time I played a single-player MechWarrior game was MechWarrior 2 back in 1997/1998. I used both keyboard+mouse and keyboard+joystick – I like the former, easier to control. The storyline was engaging and it drags you into your faction’s cause. Of course, the beauty of MechWarrior is being able to customise your mech. The customisation options were already advanced back then and the coop missions (with NPCs) were fluid.
The last release was MechWarrior 4: Vengeance back in late 2000. The next news was MechWarrior Online in 2013. But today, it is great news for all mech fans as the beloved and longstanding franchise will back.
MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries will feature intense PvE Mech combat in an immersive, career-based Mercenary campaign driven by player choice. It will feature an advancing timeline that will start in the year 3015. Players will play the role of a green MechWarrior mercenary thrust into combat as the Third Succession War continues to fracture the Inner Sphere; that vast region of colonized space surrounding planet Earth.
The game is currently under development by a dedicated and separate team at Piranha Games using Unreal Engine 4 and is set for release in 2018. MechWarrior Online, Piranha’s free-to-play MMORPG was built with CryEngine and will continuously receive updates from the MWO team.
“Our main goal with MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries is to provide fans with a standalone, story-driven single-player experience that allows for a great amount of flexibility in terms of player choice, built on a foundation of the intense, tactical Mech combat the franchise is known for,” said Russ Bullock, President of Piranha Games. “Along with the release of MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries in 2018, we’re going to continue supporting our existing MechWarrior Online game and its fanbase with new updates and regular content releases. MWO is now in its fifth year of development and operation, and there’s still a lot of really cools tuff planned for it. For fans who have been waiting for the return of a true single-player MechWarrior game though, we are really happy to announce MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries.”
The game was revealed before a packed crowd in attendance at Mech_Con 2016, a special one-day event dedicated to the celebration of BattleTech and MechWarrior. Piranha Games aims to make this an annual celebration for these long-lives and much-loved franchises. Attended by fans from around the world, the evening was capped off by an exciting conclusion to the first ever MechWarrior Online World Championship Finals, where two teams of eight duked it out on the battlefield for their shot at the World Championship title and a share of the $143,000+ prize pool.
